CHAPTER TWENTY

THE SUN GLOWED IN the Upperworld sky but did little to brighten her mood. A chunk of Parker’s heart was missing. At the nest of the Choughs, she had been magically transformed, fortifying her confidence in her abilities. Yet, she longed for her companions. They were a team—together they could accomplish all that was before them. For now, she would have to manage on her own, until she found them. Hopefully alive.

Her friends were somewhere in the terrifying warren of Underworld tunnels. She knew only a fraction of what they might come up against—the camouflaged attacks, the toxins from bites, spines, or just foul secretions in the waters. And Cole. He was the nemesis of the Underworld. Anyone who sounded the alarm on his whereabouts would invite a feeding frenzy for his capture, resulting in a battle to the end to win the approval of the Underworld royals.

The worry darkened her thoughts. She took a lengthy exhale willing her mind to return to the Chough volcano and the calm she found there. She reminded herself that Stefanos hadn’t been wrong yet.

“You zeem unhappy, Parker. I thought our vizit waz zo productive.” Belliza said. “We have the backing of the Choughz. We are going to win the zupport of all the Great Onez now becauze we have them on our zide. Do you zee that?”

Parker shook her head and rubbed the flesh on her face to erase the negativity. She needed to bury the pre-Spyridon Parker lurking within her and replace her with the self-assured Parker with whom she was becoming more comfortable.

Parker neared the glass wall and tracked the Falcons following their V formation, an effort she knew that cut wind resistance and saved up to 30% of their energy. She silently watched the sunlight parade about the lounge, alternating between brightness and dark shadows. She grinned and smiled at the thought of how like airplanes they were with wings that raised and lowered.

Then, the Falcons formed an unusual circular pattern. Parker looked more closely and distinguished a bulky form moving into the middle of their circle and toward the Sky Box. She ground her fists into her eyes, seeing, but not believing, what was before her.

She hyper-focused and her eyes lit up. She recognized Cole! His massive wings sliced through the canopy of clouds and blue sky. As he neared the Citadel, the Falcons fell off and the Ravens picked up his track. Her heart thumped in her chest. The cloud movement propelled Cole toward the Sky Box. At first, Parker spotted two heads, then made out the figures of Henley and Edison wrapped in Cole’s arms. She raced to greet them. The only smile was hers.

Henley and Edison appeared to be sleeping. Parker worried they might not be well, but she read Cole’s mind. They were exhausted and had been through a frightening experience. There was something else, too. She couldn’t put her finger on it.

He gently carried them to their rooms and returned to her with outstretched arms.
